THE High Court sentenced former IT consultant Yew Wei Liang today to 16 years in prison for the killing of another man in a road rage incident four years ago.
Judge Julia Ibrahim ruled on the penalty today, stating that Yew was found guilty under section 304(a) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Yew, 45, was originally charged with the murder of 29-year-old Syed Muhammad Danial Syed Syakir.
The killing occurred near Bandar Baru Bangi in August 2019. Yew was found to have initiated the fight which led to the victim’s death at the scene.
Julia said Yew had acted beyond his right to self-defence as he had repeatedly running into Syed Muhammd, who was already running away.
Earlier, Yew’s attorney, Wee Choo Keong asked that his client be jailed for a maximum of six years but Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, argued that the accused should be given a severe and appropriate punishment. – December 7, 2023.
