PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim said a cabinet reshuffle would be required should ministers’ performance slip.

He however said a year was too short a period to fairly assess the unity government’s administration and ministers must be given the chance to improve.

He said as the administration is a coalition government, every decision requires negotiation and equal participation.

“I think … after a year, we need to make a fair assessment. A year is too (short), so ministers should be given the chance to boost their performance, including the prime minister.

“If, based on our one-year experience, a bit of adjustment is needed, we will do the necessary,” Anwar said on TV3’s “A Year With The Madani Government: The Prime Minister’s Endeavour” tonight.

Anwar advised the cabinet not to be complacent with the unity government’s performance over the past year, adding that the people’s comfort was the true yardstick to measure the administration’s success.

“Let’s not be complacent… We should do whatever we can, but don’t think it’s that great. There’s more we can do to clean things up and improve quality and work ethics, as in the end, it’s not the growth numbers that matter,” he said.

Anwar said the administration must focus on good governance to ensure an administration free from corruption and abuse of power.

Good governance cannot be downplayed and any country with high capabilities would not have reached a satisfactory level if governance issues were not resolved, he said.

“That’s why every leader is being observed, and entities like the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission must provide reports on abuses of power or embezzlement, and if the income and wealth of the prime minister and ministers seem excessive.

“If we can clean these up, we can implement certain economic frameworks, such as the Madani Economy, the energy transition plan, digital transformation, industrialisation with a clear mission – all these can be done.

“Praise be to God, even though there is room for improvement, we have achieved what we can and things are definitely much better than before,” he said. – Bernama, December 5, 2023.
