More than 2,600 people seek shelter from Kelantan floods


More than 2,600 people have sought shelter from floods in Kelantan, as heavy rain continues to lash the east coast. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, December 3, 2023.

THE number of people displaced by floods in Kelantan rose to 2,632 as of 8am today, compared to 1,741 ast night.

The Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana website said the evacuees are housed in 14 relief centres in Kota Baru, Pasir Mas, Bachok and Tanah Merah.

Ten shelters are open in Pasir Mas, where the bulk of the evacuees are housed.  

In Bachok, 221 evacuees are taking shelter at SMK Beris Panchor and SK Jelawat.

A relief centre is open in Kota Baru for 19 people and one in Tanah Merah for 22 people.

Meanwhile, the Public InfoBanjir portal reported that three rivers in Kelantan have risen to the “alert” level. Sungai Golok in Pasir Mas  is at 17.26m, Sungai Golok in Tumpat (2.22m) and Sungai Semerak in Pasir Puteh (2.12m). – Bernama, December 3, 2023.
