Plantation worker jailed for hurting mother

AN oil palm plantation worker was sentenced to one year in prison by the magistrate’s court in Teluk Intan today for voluntarily hurting his mother when the woman refused to give him money.

Magistrate T. Ashvinii meted out the sentence on Chai Chon Tak, 29, who pleaded guilty to the charge. He was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of arrest, which was on November 27.

Chai was charged under section 323 of the Penal Code with voluntarily causing hurt to Hew Yoke Cheng, 50 – who is his biological mother – in a house at the DAP office building, Lorong Taman Langkap Jaya, at about 3pm on November 27.

The punishment is meted out under section 326 A of the Penal Code for causing hurt to a family member which provides imprisonment for a term which may extend to twice the maximum term for which he would have been liable on conviction for that offence under the relevant section.

DPP Izzudin Fakri Hamdan prosecuted, while lawyer F. Faustina, from the National Legal Aid Foundation, represented Chai. – Bernama, November 30, 2023
