THE Communications and Digital Ministry will look into the proposal of establishing a special act to tackle cyberbullying, deputy minister Teo Nie Ching said today.

She said cyberbullying, especially among teenagers, is not something that can be taken lightly, and agreed that a specific law is needed to address the matter.

“Cyberbullying, especially among teenagers, is not something that should be taken lightly.

“I accept that an act has to be created for cyberbullying.

“I will bring the proposal and discuss with other stakeholders and see which ministry is more suitable to bring about the act,” the Kulai lawmaker told parliament today.

Teo was responding to a question from Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah-PN), who asked about the measures taken to prevent the abuse of social media as suicide cases have been reported as a result of cyberbullying.

In a supplementary question, the PN lawmaker asked if there would be a law created to handle cyberbullying among students.

Teo, meanwhile, said that from January 1 this year to November 15, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in collaboration with several social media platforms, have taken down a total of 1,147 posts related to cyberbullying or harassment.

“The content posts removed according to social media platforms are TikTok (804), Facebook (195), YouTube (9), X (7), Instagram (7) and others (123),” she said. – November 27, 2023
