MUHYIDDIN Yassin has called off his plan to not stand in the party presidential election next year.

The Bersatu president said he has agreed to stay on for one more term following repeated calls from delegates taking part in the presidential address debate to retract his decision.

The Pagoh lawmaker had earlier said he was determined to not contest the president’s post for another term.

“But my wife said to stay another term. The real power isn’t the annual general assembly. It’s my wife.

“She told me not to disappoint the members who need me,” he told delegates attending the assembly.

“I want to state here that because of the wishes of party members and fellow party leaders, I have decided to offer myself as party president,” he said amid loud cheers from delegates.

The Bersatu general assembly this morning rejected Muhyiddin’s decision to not stand in the party presidential election next year.

Party chairman Suhaimi Abdullah announced the rejection after speakers taking part in the presidential address debate repeatedly demanded that Muhyiddin withdraw his decision.

Suhaimi said the rejection aligns with articles 123, 124 and 125 of the party constitution, which provides for such a decision.

Last night the Bersatu supreme council had unanimously rejected Muhyiddin’s decision to relinquish his party position.

In a statement, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said the supreme council did not accept Muhyiddin’s decision.

The statement came after an emergency meeting of the supreme council chaired by its deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

The Bersatu co-founder and president announced that he will not stand for president for another term.

He said it was time for him to step down as the party had many capable leaders.

“It’s time to let go. I will not defend the president’s post for the next term.

“My final message (is), please take good care of the party. I pray that the transition process will be conducted in an orderly and harmonious manner,” he said. – November 25, 2023.
