THE Kemaman by-election will begin tomorrow with nominations at Dewan Berlian Kemaman Municipal Council in Chukai.

Each candidate will have from 9am to 10am to submit their nomination forms before eligible candidates are announced by the returning officer.

Once nominations are finalised, candidates will have 14 days to campaign in Kemaman’s four state constituencies – Kemasik, Kijal, Air Putih and Chukai.

Polling day is December 2, with early voting on November 28.

The by-election was called after the Terengganu election court nullified the victory of Che Alias Hamid of PAS, who won the Kemaman seat in the 2022 general election.

The polls will see 141,790 electors, including 387 military officers and their spouses, and 12 absentee voters casting their ballots.

In the national polls last year, Che Alias won Kemaman with a 27,179-vote majority after obtaining 65,714 votes to defeat Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Ahmad Said (38,535 votes), Pakatan Harapan’s Hasuni Sudin (8,340 votes), and Pejuang’s Rosli Ab Ghani (506 votes).

Last year’s BN and PAS candidates said they would not contest this by-election, but in a surprise move, BN announced former chief of defence forces Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor as its candidate on Monday.
