More flood victims in Kedah tonight, say authorities

THE number of flood victims in Kedah continues to rise while Perak showed reduced numbers tonight.

IN KEDAH, the total number of flood victims increased to 210 from 68 families tonight compared with 107 victims from 34 families this morning.

The Kedah Civil Defence Force Disaster Management secretariat head, Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said two temporary relief centres were opened in Kota Setar district. 

“The two relief centres are at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Titi Gajah and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Alor Merah with 85 and 94 additional victims respectively as at 8pm tonight following a heavy downpour in the evening. 

Apart from that, another relief centre was opened in Kota Setar at SK Taman Aman at 5pm but the number of victims housed is being counted,” he said in a statement tonight.

The centre was opened on Monday following three hours of heavy rain which flooded several areas among them were Kampung Lahar, Kampung Paya Tok Keong, Kampung Paya Tok Teh and Kampung Biak in the district.

IN PERAK flood victims in three districts tonight reduced to 187 people from 54 families compared to 217 people from 62 families this morning with two relief centres closed late this afternoon.

The Perak State Disaster Management Committee secretariat in a statement said the Chikus Multipurpose Hall relief centre was closed at 6.30pm this evening while the Sri Kinta Public Hall relief centre was closed at 7pm last night.

Four relief centres are still operating, namely the Shooting Range Multipurpose Hall in Hilir Perak with 98 people from 29 families sheltering there.

“In Kerian, 23 people from four families are still at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Changkat Lobak relief centre, while the number of flood victims at SK Alor Pongsu relief centre also remains at 57 people from 19 families,” according to the statement.

The secretariat said in Kinta district, nine people from two families are still in Dewan Orang Ramai Taman Meru 2A relief centre. – Bernama, November 15, 2023.
