More lawmakers could shift support, says report

BERSATU members are no longer confident the party can last until the next general election as more could pledge their support for the unity government, Berita Harian reported.

Sources told the Malay daily that five more Bersatu MPs will soon shift their support.

“It all depends on the roles played by those convincing them to support the government,” sources said.

A senior leader – who did not want to be named – claimed this situation started following investigations and charges against several party leaders linked to the Jana Wibawa money laundering case.

“They are not convinced Bersatu can rise again from the effects of the charges and maybe, Bersatu may not even last until the next general election.”

Apart from the MPs, a source said state assemblymen, division chiefs and those who hold positions in party wings are also waiting to change their support.

Last week, four Bersatu MPs pledged their support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim but said they remained loyal to Bersatu.

They are Jeli MP Zahari Kechik, Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), and Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang).

Bersatu had suspended the membership of Iskandar for four years and Suhaili for six years. Action against the remaining two have yet to be announced.

On Thursday, Bukit Gantang Bersatu MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal declared his support for Anwar.

A source said the five MPs could influence their friends or party to restore their confidence.

“There is information the total number of MPs who will shift their support are 11, but I am confident of nine. Four have announced it, now there are five left,” the source said. – November 13, 2023.
