Anwar must focus on strengthening Malaysia’s economy

AS we approach the Apec Summit to be held in San Francisco, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s decision to bring the Palestinian issue to the global stage has received mixed reactions. Although this initiative has high humanitarian value, some experts argue this platform should be used to discuss more urgent economic issues directly relevant to Malaysia’s economic interests.

Currently, Malaysia is facing the worst depreciation of the ringgit in 25 years, a situation that is pressing on the purchasing power of its people. This decline not only reflects economic difficulties but also raises concerns about investor confidence in Malaysia’s economy. It raises critical questions on the role of Anwar’s international diplomacy. To what extent do his international travels and meetings contribute to solving domestic economic problems?

Even though there is an opportunity to engage in meetings like the one between United States President Joe Biden and Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the consensus suggests that Anwar’s presence may not be necessary, even if invited. In the context of a critical economy, the focus on domestic issues and economic recovery is considered more important and urgent.

As a nation active in the global arena, Malaysia must wisely balance its needs for international diplomacy and domestic issues. Facing deepening economic challenges, the increasingly strengthened view is that Anwar needs to focus his attention on strengthening the country’s economy.

Of course, Malaysia should play a role in global issues. However, let’s not forget that domestic issues, such as the economy and political stability, are also important. As citizens, we want a government that balances both – managing internal and external issues wisely. – November 12, 2023.
