DEPUTY Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today urged residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions to reduce the impact.

Zahid, who also chairs the Central Disaster Management Committee, said heavy rains have caused several areas to be inundated, and the water levels in major rivers are rising.

He said as of noon today, six districts in Perak, Selangor and Pahang, were affected, with 237 families evacuated to 12 relief centres.

He said according to the Department of Irrigation Department, three rivers recorded dangerous levels as of 6am today – Sungai Pontian Besar Kulai in Kampung Sri Paya, Johor Baru; Sungai Perak in Changkat Jong and Sungai Langat in Bangi Lama. MetMalaysia had also issued a forecast for three days from today.

“Based on analysis, thunderstorms are expected in the rural areas and western regions of the peninsula, northern Sarawak, and western Sabah, especially in the late afternoon to evening,” he said.

Zahid also called on those living in flood-prone areas to refer to the latest information.

“I pray and hope the floods will not cause damage, and I wish the victims for endurance and patience,” he said. – Bernama, November 6, 2023
