THE Latin American Film Festival returns with films from nine countries, showcasing the rich tapestry of Latin American and Caribbean culture.

The festival will be held from November 16-19 at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), Mid Valley Megamall, and November 30 to December 3 at GSC Gurney Plaza, Penang.

It’s opening feature will be the Argentine film, “Argentina, 1985”, a film that received nominations at the 2023 Oscars and Baftas, and secured accolades at the Golden Globes, Goya, and Platino Awards.

“The film is a fiction based on historical events during the trial of the Military Juntas,” said a statement issued by the Mexican Embassy in Malaysia.

The festival serves as a platform to celebrate the diverse cultures, languages, and narratives of this region through cinema.

This year’s edition welcomes back Uruguay and Venezuela.

Additionally, the festival showcases films from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Among the films are “The Good Herbs” from Mexico, a drama depicting a woman’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease; “El Beat” from Colombia, a tale of resistance told through music; and “The Dolphin, Story of a Dreamer” from Peru, an animated film based on a novel that narrates the adventures of a dolphin.

The festival is organised by the Argentinian, Brazilian, Chilean, Colombian, Cuban, Mexican, Peruvian, Uruguayan, and Venezuelan Embassies with the support of Cinema Online.

For both GSC Mid Valley and GSC Gurney Plaza, complimentary tickets can be obtained one hour before the showtimes. – Bernama, November 6, 2023.
