ACTING Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Armizan Mohd Ali said there have not been reports of chicken prices being hiked after the prices were floated last week.
Armizan said the ministry’s monitoring revealed the price of standard chicken in the peninsula started at RM5.79 per kg.
“However, there were traders selling chicken for up to RM10.50 per kg in Mentakab, Temerloh and Pasar Awam Matang, Perak. The ministry’s enforcement team … will engage with the traders instead of taking legal action.
“As for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, I received directions from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to personally monitor prices there because he received information chicken prices were higher than in the Peninsula,” he told a press conference on the Festive Season Maximum Price Control Scheme for Deepavali in Kajang today.
Armizan said in Sabah, the popular product there was super chicken, not standard chicken, hence the prices ranging from RM10 to RM13.90 per kg.
He said in areas like Sarawak’s Lawas and Limbang, cleaned chicken could reach up to RM18.90 per kg due to logistics costs.
Armizan said the ministry would hold Rahmah and Agro Madani Sales in areas facing chicken supply and price issues.
“I acknowledge the price of chicken in the peninsula is cheaper than in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan due to several factors. To resolve this price imbalance will definitely require some time and cooperation of the state governments,” he said. – Bernama, November 6, 2023.
