COMMUNICATIONS and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said his ministry would hold discussions with relevant ministries and agencies regarding the regulation of TikTok Shop.
He said after a meeting between his deputy Teo Nie Ching and TikTok representatives last Thursday, the ministry received basic information about the demographics and the goods sold.
“I have asked for detailed information. We will discuss with other ministries and agencies further as my ministry’s and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) jurisdiction is regulating network usage.
“There are other matters that fall under the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry’s authority. We will hold discussions before finalising,” he said after presenting Deepavali contributions to the Indian community in Lembah Pantai today.
On October 7, Fahmi said the government would look into the action taken by Indonesia to ban e-commerce transactions on TikTok before devising appropriate measures.
Fahmi had received complaints from concerned members of the public, and at the same time, several large stores also raised issues related to pricing through the platform.
Fahmi said MCMC also had discussions with TikTok after receiving complaints from parties who were restricted from discussing the Palestinian issue.
“TikTok’s response to the matter was embarrassing. MCMC also expressed several concerns, so I have asked for one final meeting with TikTok,” he said.
He also said despite receiving cooperation, TikTok has yet to appoint representatives in Malaysia.
“We have to wait for officials from Singapore, the Philippines and others, which is not conducive.
“This cannot go on because it is causing a delay. The ministry and MCMC are looking to enhance regulations,” he said.
Meanwhile, Fahmi, who is also Lembah Pantai MP, said Deepavali contributions have been distributed to 1,000 families, compared to the previous 700, due to the positive response from residents. – Bernama, November 4, 2023.
