LABUAN lawmaker Suhaili Abdul Rahman has declared his support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He is the second Perikatan Nasional MP to do so after Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid on October 12.

Suhaili, who is Bersatu Federal Territories chief, also expressed his support for Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor.

“To avoid any doubt, I remain a loyal member of Bersatu even though I support the leadership of the prime minister and the Sabah chief minister,” Suhaili said in a statement today.

“I would also like to emphasise my support for the prime minister is without any coercion or pressure from any party and that it was a wholehearted decision taken to benefit the people of Labuan.”

With Suhaili on its side, the Anwar administration once again has a two-thirds majority in parliament, which it lost when Muda’s Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman withdrew support for the government.

Suhaili is likely to face disciplinary action from his party and the anger of the people of Labuan.

“It is to ensure the welfare of the people of Labuan are protected and that they are not left behind”

“I hereby support the government’s policies to strengthen the development, economy and welfare of the people until the next general election,” Suhaili said.

Earlier, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said Iskandar was given a show-cause letter after he decided to back Anwar’s government.

Hamzah, who is also the opposition leader, had said that Iskandar was compelled to meet with a top officer from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and threatened with corruption charges if he refused to switch sides.

Anwar had denied the “serious allegation” and asked Hamzah to back his allegations with evidence.  – October 30, 2023.
