THE Starlink satellite device installed at Kampung Langsat in Ranau has allowed 500 residents access to high-speed internet of over 200mbps, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the devices installed under the Proof of Concept project was a temporary measure to address connectivity issues and meet residents’ needs, pending the completion of a telecommunication tower under the National Digital Network Plan.
Fahmi said the Starlink device in Kampung Langsat was installed on September 7, the second in Sabah after the first was installed in Keningau on September 5.
“Unlike other places where the Starlink device is installed on the roof, in this village, the device was mounted on the building to ensure it remains sturdy,” he told reporters after visiting the Starlink installation site today.
Fahmi said his ministry was working to ensure a telecommunication tower was available for Kampung Langsat residents soon.
“I will be meeting the chief minister (Hajiji Mohd Noor) tomorrow, and we will discuss this matter in addition to other efforts to meet the telecommunications needs in Sabah,” he said.
Kampung Langsat head Paimin Abdullah said the high-speed internet access has helped students complete their homework.
“It was difficult to access the internet here, but now it is easier for us to communicate, especially with our family members living outside the village.
“I hope the installation of the Starlink device and its coverage will be expanded,” he said. – Bernama, October 29, 2023.
