PROMINENT lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah will respond to allegations that he was paid RM9.5 million by Prime Minister Najib Razak from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds.
Shafee spoke to reporters at the Kuala Lumpur High Court complex this morning, at about the same time Anwar Ibrahim filed a fresh challenge to set aside his sodomy conviction.
“I will issue a press statement, but not today,” was Shafee’s terse reply when approached just as he was about to get into his car.
The Umno lawyer, however, did not say when the statement will be issued.
A Sarawak Report expose on May 31 alleged that Najib used 1MDB funds to pay Shafee, the lead public prosecutor during the appeal against the acquittal of the PKR de facto leader.
The whistle-blower site said the money came from the bank account “that had been identified as having been funded by money stolen by the prime minister from 1MDB subsidiary SRC, which had borrowed some RM4 billion from the civil service pension fund (Retirement Fund Inc) KWAP”.
Several police reports had been lodged by Pakatan Harapan parties to push for a police investigation into the allegation. – June 9, 2017.
