THE campaign period for the Pelangai state by-election entered its last day today. Voters will head to the polls tomorrow to vote for their new assemblyman.
The Pelangai by-election is a three-cornered clash between Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Amizar Abu Adam, Kasim Samat of Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Independent Haslihelmy DM Zulhasni.
The by-election was called following the death of incumbent Johari Harun in a plane crash on August 17.
Nine polling centres will open from 8am to 6pm tomorrow. The votes will be counted at Dewan Orang Ramai Felda Kemasul in Bentong.
According to the Election Commission (EC), 16,456 people are registed to vote in Pelangai.
Among the three candidates, only Kasim will vote tomorrow because Amizar and Haslihelmy are both registered voters in the Ketari state seat, which is also in the Bentong parliamentary constituency.
The Meteorological Department has forecasted fine weather for Pelangai in the morning, while thunderstorms are predicted in one or two spots in the evening.
The BN campaign received support from high-profile figures such as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and former Pahang menteri besar Adnan Yaakob, who was a Pelangai assemblyman for 36 years.
PN was bolstered by appearances by its chairman Muhyiddin Yassin, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Pelangai
As for Haslihelmy, his campaign was assisted by family members and close friends and lacking banners and posters.
In the 2022 general election, Johari won the seat for BN with a majority of 4,048 votes, defeating PN’s Kasim Ahmed Wafiuddin (Pakatan Harapan) and Isa Ahmad (Pejuang). – Bernama, October 6, 2023.
