Babysitter denies neglect in child drowning


A BABYSITTER pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today to a charge of neglecting a three-year-old girl who was under her care, causing the child to drown in an incident in a house in Wangsa Maju two weeks ago.

Siti Aina Nurnisa Mohammad Sai’d, 25, as the carer, was accused of neglecting the child in a manner that caused her to drown in an apartment unit in Lojing Height, Wangsa Maju between 11am and 11.20am last September 20.

Under section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, the charge provides for a fine of not more than RM50,000, a maximum 20 years’ jail or both.

Judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril allowed the woman bail of RM5,000 with one surety and fixed November 15 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Lim Chooi Yi prosecuted, while lawyer Muhammad Irsyad Mohamad Hassan represented the accused.

Siti Aina has three children, including a one-year-old who is still being breastfed. She is taking care of her parents, including a bedridden father. – Bernama, October 2, 2023.
