Number of flood evacuees rises in Perlis, Kedah

THE number of flood evacuees in shelters rose overnight in Kedah and Perlis.

In KEDAH, the number of evacuees grew to 268 this morning compared to 177 last night.

The state Civil Defence Force (APM) disaster management secretariat head Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said two new relief centres were opened in Dewan Seri Bagan and SK Taman Aman in Kota Setar, taking the total number of shelters in Kedah to four.

“In Kota Setar, Dewan Seri Bagan relief centre, which opened at 7pm last night, is providing shelter to 40 people from 14 households while the SK Taman Aman relief centre, which started operating at 11pm is housing 40 people from 12 households,” he said in a statement today.

In Kubang Pasu, the SMK Changlun relief centre, which opened on Monday, had 150 people while the Kampung Tradisi Lembah Keriang relief centre, which opened yesterday, had 38.

In PERLIS, the number of flood victims in Arau rose to 38 people compared to 18 yesterday.

State APM director Mohd Izaimi Md Daud said the evacuees were housed in Dewan SK Arau.

In SABAH, the number of flood evacuees from five villages in Beaufort remained unchanged at 134 as of 8am.

The state disaster management committee secretariat said the evacuees were in Dewan Selagon, which was opened Sunday, following flooding due to continuous heavy rain.
