POLICE yesterday took a statement from Ipoh Timur MP Howard Lee to assist in a probe into allegations that he had insulted Islam by quoting a Quranic verse.
Bukit Aman Crime Investigation Department director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the case was filed under section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
“Once the investigation is complete, the papers will be submitted to the Attorney-General’s Office,” he said in a statement last night.
Shuhaily urged people to use social media wisely without broaching sensitive issues related to race, religion and royalty.
He warned that action will be taken against anyone who is deemed to have been detrimental to the peace and harmony or the security of the country.
Earlier today, Lee apologised for quoting a Quranic verse in a video on social media.
Lee said that he had no intention to touch on the sensitivity of the Muslim community.
Perak Jabat president Amiruddin Mohd Daud said the organisation had lodged a police report seeking an investigation into Lee. He said Lee’s actions were an insult to Islam as the MP was not a Muslim but had interpreted a Quranic verse. – Bernama, September 27, 2023.
