THE National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) is working to mitigate floods in 89 flood-prone areas across the country ahead of the year-end monsoon.
Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Functions Minister Armizan Mohd Ali said areas at risk of floods are mainly in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor.
Floods are recurrent in 78 of the 89 areas, he added.
“Nadma has been instructed to monitor preparations (for floods), especially in high-risk areas because based on last year’s northeast monsoon dat, as many as 89 areas in Malaysia were affected by the disaster.
“Meanwhile, 77 districts experienced multiple flood disasters during the northeast monsoon period from November 2022 to March,” he was quoted as saying in a New Straits Times report.
Earlier today,129 people from 48 households in Perak were reported to have been evacuated to shelters in Taiping, Selama and Batang Padang because of floods.
In Baling, 102 people from 33 households were moved to two temporary relief centres after their homes were inundated by flash floods following heavy rain last night. – September 22, 2023.
