DEPUTY Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching said the ministry would table proposed amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 in parliament early next year.

Teo said the law was being reviewed by ministry agencies through engagements with stakeholders.

“The ministry feels it is time for a review of the law to ensure existing provisions are adequate to take action against any type of offence, particularly cybercrimes.

“If we are not able to table it (in parliament) this year, we will do it next year,” she told reporters after the screening of the movie “Malbatt: Misi Bakara” at TGV AEON Mall in Kulai today.

Teo said there was proof artificial intelligence (AI) is being misused to run scams.

She said scammers were using AI to mimic human voices and appearances to fool family members and close friends.

She said the amendments would also include increasing the responsibility of service providers.

Teo was commenting on Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain’s statement on the need for a review of Malaysia’s laws on cybercrimes to cover cheating via computer software and devices.

Razarudin reportedly said cybercrimes were expected to rise in tandem with fast-paced technology, especially with the use of AI. – Bernama, September 17, 2023.
