SARAWAK’s plan to supply commercial electricity to Singapore will not affect the state’s domestic supply, said state Utility and Telecommunications Minister Julaihi Narawi.

He said Sarawak will set conditions such as higher power tariffs for Singapore to ensure its long-term plan is profitable for the state and Malaysia.

“Areas without electricity in the state are new housing areas and off-grid areas. The Sarawak government, via the Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (Sares), is actively providing electricity in such areas.

“This power exchange agreement does not impact domestic usage because our electricity supply is sufficient, even excessive,” he told the press after witnessing the handover of the accreditation letter for the Electrical Inspectorate Unit’s Solar Photovoltaic System Design course at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak today.

In his speech, Julaihi said Singapore would build the 700km undersea cables in Malaysia and Indonesia’s waters.

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg previously said the state agreed to supply 1GW of electricity to Singapore via undersea cables, adding that apart from Singapore, Sarawak Energy Bhd also held negotiations with Brunei to export power. – Bernama, September 11, 2023.
