VOTERS must pressure Pakatan Harapan (PH) elected representatives to step down for backtracking on their election promises to fight corruption, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said.
He said the people, instead of asking him to quit his seat for breaking with the unity government, should demand that the PH MPs resign.
He said PH lawmakers had betrayed the voters by backing the public prosecutor’s decision to drop the 47 corruption charges against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“If I must empty my seat for wanting to fight corruption, I suggest you buy a mirror for those MPs or ministers who also pledged to do the same during the general election.
“You all have to vacate your seats too. When were you elected to free those charged for corruption? Are you willing to vacate your seats?” he said
Earlier today, Muda’s sole lawmaker, Syed Saddiq, said he would no longer support the unity government over the Zahid case.
The Muar lawmaker said Muda will now serve as the political third force.
Syed Saddiq’s response comes following calls from PH lawmakers asking him to vacate the Muar parliamentary seat.
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said Syed Saddiq had won the Muar seat with the help of PH and not on his own merit.
Syed Saddiq said Muda had joined PH to fight corruption.
“Before the general election we said we would… fight corruption and bring about reforms,” he said.
But everything changed after the polls, he said.
“Previously they wanted to send corrupt people to prison, now they drop corruption charges. Then they wanted to bring reforms, now the reforms are buried,” the former youth and sports minister said.
“I’ve remained consistent till today. Who betrayed the people? Not me,” he said.
Syed Saddiq’s withdrawal of support means the government bloc will lose its two-thirds majority in parliament. – September 10, 2023.
