MCA president Wee Ka Siong has refuted claims there are party members and supporters intending to boycott Pakatan Harapan (PH) Suhaizan Kaiat in the September 9 Pulai parliamentary by-election.

He said the party’s machinery will do its best to ensure at least 70% of Chinese voters in the constituency vote for the unity government representative.

“We are here today, and have been since last week, so what’s there to boycott? We have briefed our machinery and informed focus areas, that’s been done, we have camped and campaigned.

“I don’t know where these rumours come from. Let those who wish to gossip do so, we have no boycott at all on our end,” he told reporters after attending a meeting with Chinese community leaders at the MCA office in Johor Bahru today, with Suhaizan in attendance.

The Ayer Hitam MP said the Chinese community has responded positively towards the PH candidate as he is not a stranger in the state.

“He has been Johor assembly speaker under three menteris besar. He’s no parachute candidate, but has served for a long time here.

“What’s important is that voters elect candidates from parties that can guarantee political stability. The challenge is to ensure voters come out and cast their ballots,” he said.

The Pulai parliamentary by-election is a three-cornered fight between Suhaizan, Perikatan Nasional candidate Zulkifli Jaafar and Independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi on September 9, with early voting set for September 5. – Bernama, September 3, 2023.
