PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim will lead a delegation to the Asean summit and related meetings in Jakarta from September 5 to 7 – his second after the regional gathering in Labuan Bajo.
Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said this is the prime minister’s first summit with the seven Asean Dialogue Partners – Australia, China, Japan, India, South Korea, the United States and Canada.
“The prime minister has a busy schedule and is expected to arrive tomorrow evening accompanied by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and a delegation,” he told a press conference in Jakarta today.
On Tuesday, the prime minister will participate in the summit and the opening of the Asean-Indo Pacific Forum, and hold meetings with members of the Malaysian diaspora.
He will then partake in six summits on Wednesday – the Asean-China, Asean-South Korea, Asean-Japan, Asean Plus Three, Asean-US and Asean-Canada meets, during the last of which the Asean-Canada Strategic Partnership will be launched.
Four summits will be held on Thursday – the Asean-India, East Asia, Asean-Australia and Asean-United Nations meets.
During the summits, 11 bilateral meetings have been scheduled for Anwar with South Korea President Yoon Suk-yeol, Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, United States Vice-President Kamala Harris, Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
He will also meet with Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet, Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin, India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Timor Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres, and founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum Prof Klaus Schwab.
Zambry said the Asean Summit will be preceded by several meetings tomorrow between Asean Foreign Ministers.
Zambry is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Cambodia Foreign Minister Sok Chenda Sophea, Serbia Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic, and Peru Foreign Minister Ana Gervasi. – Bernama, September 3, 2023.
