SIX people, including two girls, believed to be from the same family, were killed in a road crash in Jalan Segamat-Kuantan, near Taman Yayasan, Segamat, yesterday
evening.
Five of them were dead at the scene while the sixth, a five-year-old boy, died on the way to hospital.
Segamat district police chief Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said the child is believed to have died from head and body injuries.
The deceased were a couple and their children, who were travelling in a Perodua Alza when it became involved in a crash with four other vehicles.
“Meanwhile, a 15-year-old boy was seriously injured and is still being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Segamat Hospital,” Zamry said in a statement today.
Zamry said the 6.37pm incident is believed to have occurred when a lorry crashed into the back of a Honda HRV, which had slowed down due to road repair works.
He said the lorry, laden with sand, then veered into the opposite lane to collide with the Alza.
A Proton Wira and Perodua Bezza were also hit.
“The lorry driver suffered serious injuries while the occupants of the HRV, Wira and Bezza escaped unhurt,” he said.
The case is being investigated under section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, he said.
Bandar Baru Segamat Fire and Rescue station chief Mazuki Ismail said two fire engines and an emergency medical rescue services vehicle rushed to the scene of the accident after a distress call was placed at 6.33pm.
The bodies of the victims and the injured were sent to the Segamat Hospital. The rescue operation ended at 9.34pm.
Police have appealed to those with information on the collision to call the Segamat Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at 07-932 5811. – Bernama, September 2, 2023.
