PAS should stop calling DAP an enemy of Islam, party secretary-general Anthony Loke said today.

He urged the Islamist party to stop using his pact as a political punching bag to serve its own interests.

He said DAP being critical of the hudud issue does not mean it is Islam’s enemy.

Loke said DAP cooperated with PAS in the past when they agreed to disagree on certain things.

“(We at) DAP have been consistent in our stand throughout our political cooperation with PAS, that we focus on mutually agreed issues but take an ‘agree to disagree’ approach (on certain things).

“The core issue that DAP cannot approve is the implementation of hudud law.

“DAP is consistent in this matter because hudud is not based in the legal system enshrined in the Federal Constitution,” Loke said in a statement today.

He said apart from DAP, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad also rejected hudud.

“If (PAS) has forgotten Dr Mahathir’s stand because they are friends now, I can refer them to media reports (on that).

“Dr Mahathir was also against (hudud), just like parties such as MCA, MIC and Gerakan.

Loke, who is transport minister, was referring to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s speech in Johor yesterday where he said DAP leaders had asked PAS to “ditch” Islam as part of their past political cooperation.

Loke denied the allegations, saying DAP had never asked PAS to “throw” Islam away in deals between the two parties.
