PAS is confident that the recent green wave which contributed to Perikatan Nasional (PN)’s victory in the state polls will expand to Johor, repeating its effect in the upcoming two by-elections in the state next month.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, said it is evident the green wave managed to penetrate into several Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold seats.

“We received a very good response in Negri Sembilan and Selangor, which many said there will be no green wave effect.

“The green wave has happened (in Selangor and Negri Sembilan). We hope its influence will reach Johor, God willing,” he said when met by reporters at PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said this while commenting on Johor PH Deputy Chairman Aminolhuda Hassan’s statement that the green wave will not happen in the Pulai Parliament and Simpang Jeram state assembly by-elections next month and that the opposition coalition will be rejected by the people of Johor.

Aminolhuda said the ‘wave’ won’t be accepted by the people of Johor who prioritise moderation, making it difficult for PAS to gain a foothold in Johor.

In the six state elections last week, PN won many seats in Malay majority constituencies defeating Umno in several straight fights.

The bloc also denied PH a two third majority in Selangor for the first time in 15 years.

PN retained Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah while PH-BN did not create any upset in the east coast states.

The Pulai and Simpang Jeram seats were previously held by the late Salahuddin Ayub, who was Amanah deputy president and the domestic trade and cost of living minister. He died on July 23 after suffering a brain haemorrhage. He was 61.

Amanah has picked former Johor assembly speaker Suhaizan Kaiat to defend the Pulai parliamentary seat while engineer Nazri Abdul Rahman will contest in the Simpang Jeram state constituency.

The Election Commission has set August 26 as the nomination day for the by-elections while the polling day falls on September 9. Early voting is set for September 5. –  August 19, 2023.
