THE recitation of the Rukun Negara as a preamble in all government events is a step in the right direction.

We are all aware of the national principles. They are not just five lines of words. They are more than that. They serves as a pillar for nationhood and nation building. These principles work to instil patriotism and love for country in Malaysians. The Rukun Negara and what it stands for should already be a way of life for all Malaysians.
Let us fully understand and appreciate the Rukun Negara. It is a guide for self-reflection and should shape our words and actions. We must work towards the common objectives of peace, harmony and togetherness. The Rukun Negara strengthens our loyalty to country and responsibility to each other. Let us practise what we preach.
At the same time, the recital of the Rukun Negara pledge should not be confined to government events or schools. Its reach must be expanded and amplified to all sectors. This is not asking too much. It is the least we can do to show not only our love for country, but for one another.
The government must follow through on its proposal for the Rukun Negara to be recited at the opening ceremony of the lower and upper houses of Parliament. Our MPs and senators must lead by example.
We are only days away from the 66th National Day. Let us not let selfish individuals divide us. Look towards not only the Rukun Negara, but also the Jalur Gemilang for inspiration, hope, and a strengthened sense of unity. Let these symbols of sovereignty and nationhood guide us to be better Malaysians for a better Malaysia. – August 17, 2023.
