24 women candidates win state seats

TWENTY-FOUR of the 71 women who stood in yesterday’s state elections won a seat, the Election Commission (EC) said.

Fifteen of Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) 26 women candidates won while eight of 19 Perikatan Nasional (PN) women were declared victors.

PH candidate Phee Syn Tze, who is making her electoral debut, won the Sungai Puyu seat in Penang by 21,330 votes after securing 23,838 votes to defeat PN’s Andrew Teow .

Another first-timer, 35-year-old Nurul Syazwani Noh of PN won the Permatang seat in Selangor with a majority of 1,728 votes. The daughter of former Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar won 12,850 votes to PH candidate Mohd Yahya Mat Sahri’s 11,122.

Barisan Nasional (BN) banked on 12 women candidates but only one of them won. Bibi Sharliza Mohd Khalid took the Juasseh seat in Negri Sembilan, beating PN’s Eddin Syazlee Shith by only 78 votes.
