THE son-in-law of ex-prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Muhammad Adlan Berhan, today dismissed allegations he is on the run.

Adlan, through his lawyer Baljit Singh Sidhu, said he left the country legally.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki today said his agency may request Interpol’s assistance to find Adlan and lawyer Mansoor Saat, who fled the country after they were placed on MACC’s “wanted” list.

“Insofar as the press release sought to convey the impression that our client is a fugitive on the run, our client categorically rejects, in the strongest terms, such insinuation,” Baljit was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.

“Our client, like any other free citizen of Malaysia, has the right of movement and travel, including overseas, and more so to conduct his business in any part of the world.

“The exercise of these rights by our client should not be construed or mischaracterised as an attempt to avoid or stall investigation. Our client states before he left Malaysia lawfully, he was: never arrested (and) never called by the MACC for a meeting or to assist in any investigation of any kind.”

The lawyer said Adlan will return to the country soon to assist the MACC if “threats and persecution” are eliminated.

The 48-year-old Adlan is married to Nabilah, Muhyiddin’s second child.

Azam, however, said earlier the two men had left the country on May 17 and 21  separately, and there was no record of them returning.

The MACC chief said investigators have an idea of Adlan’s whereabouts but cannot disclose details. – August 9, 2023.
