Man dies in Setiawangsa police custody


Bukit Aman says its death-in-custody investigation unit will probe into the death of a 59-year-old man who was being detained in the Setiawangsa police station lock-up. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, July 26, 2023.

A 59-YEAR-OLD man has died while being held in the Setiawangsa police station lock-up, Bukit Aman integrity and compliance department director Azri Ahmad said.

He said the detainee’s cellmate found him struggling to breathe and alerted the station’s personnel.

Azeri said the police immediately contacted the hospital and an ambulance arrived to take the detainee to the hospital.

“The doctor from Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s emergency and trauma department examined the man and pronounced him dead.

“Bukit Aman’s death-in-custody investigation unit will investigate the matter,” Azri said in a statement today.

He said a post-mortem would be carried out to determine the victim’s cause of death.

Azri said the man was arrested on July 6 under section 39(b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 but police continued to detain him after he was found linked to another case. – July 26, 2023.
