BARISAN Nasional (BN) will be fielding 12 candidates in the Selangor state elections on August 12, Umno secretary general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said.
Pakatan Harapan who won the Dusun Tua and Gombak Setia seats in 2018 have now relinquished the seats to BN candidates Johan Abd Aziz and Megat Zulkarnain Omardin.
The two seats were previously won by former DAP candidates Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof and Hilman Idham, who defected from PKR in 2020.
Megat who is also Selangor Umno chairman most likely will face incumbent Hilman, who might defend the seat on behalf of Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Only two of four Selangor BN incumbents will be defending their seats namely Rizam Ismail (Sungai Air Tawar) and Mohd Imran Tamrin (Sungai Panjang).
However, not on the list was Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz who is the Umno Kota Raja division chief and speculation was rife he would be fielded.
The other candidates are Batang Kali – Mohd Isa Abu Kasim, Sungai Burong – Mohamad Khir Ramli, Jeram-Jahaya Ibrahim, Kuang – Hasnal Rezua Merican Habib Merican, Semenyih – Wan Zulaika Anua, Sijangkang – Mohd Al-Hafizi Abu Bakar , Selat Klang – Roslee Abd Hamid and Dengkil – Noorazli Said.
Earlier, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said they will be contesting 108 out of 245 seats in six states.
He said that 63% of the candidates are new faces, while 18% are incumbents with 20% who are made up of those who have competed, but want to offer themselves again.
“This is proof of the continuity of new and old faces. We also will not forget female candidates, where there are quite a number. Likewise for youth and puteri.”
“We want to highlight what BN and the unity government can offer voters,” he said at the World Trade Centre, in Kuala Lumpur. – July 21, 2023.
