THE two bottles filled with wires that were discovered under social activist Siti Kasim’s car today are believed to be an improvised explosive device (IED), Brickfields district police chief Amihizam Abdul Shukor said.

Amihizam said police received the distress call at 12.58pm and immediately acted on it.

“We immediately dispatched a bomb squad while the Fire and Rescue Department was also on hand to assist.

“The bomb squad managed to dispose of both bottles believed to be an IED,” he told reporters at the scene today.

He said experts will analyse the contents of the bottles.

“We will conduct further checks to find out whether the device was active or not,” he said.

Amihizam said police had not recorded the Siti Kasim’s statement.

“We have not recorded her statement but verbally, we discovered she did not have any enemies.

“However, we will investigate,” he said.

Siti Kasim took to social media this afternoon saying an object resembling a homemade explosive device had been placed in her car.

The lawyer, in a live broadcast on her official Facebook, said the discovery was made when she sent her vehicle for maintenance at a service centre in Bangsar at noon today.

She said the service centre called to inform her about an object placed on a wheel.

“There are two mineral bottles hanging on the back of the car’s tyre. At the moment the car is still in the service centre and nothing can be done.

“I have called the police and told them this is a bomb threat,” she said.

The purported bomb-like material appeared to be two bottles stuffed with many wires, which were attached with a hook to the car’s undercarriage.

Siti said she decided to send her car for servicing as she has a court case in Kelantan this weekend.

“Luckily I sent my car for service today. Otherwise I wouldn’t have known,” the activist said.

Claiming her car was parked in her condominium all this while, Siti said she was unaware of how and when the object could have been fitted on her vehicle.

“I only went out to Petaling Jaya last night and I’m sure the police can find the culprit soon,” she said. – July 21, 2023.
