MALAYSIA will maintain its no-nuclear policy in power generation, said Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Speaking at the “National Energy Transition Roadmap: Navigating the Energy Transition, What’s Next for Malaysia?” programme in Kuala Lumpur today, Nik Nazmi said the government recognises the potential of small modular reactors but does not plan to explore nuclear power generation due to environmental concerns.
“Small modular reactors are different from major ones like in Hiroshima or Chernobyl.
“You need to convince the public, and I think that is something that we have not done yet, so we are not exploring nuclear (energy) anytime soon,” he said at the round-table session. – Bernama, July 20, 2023.
