A RECENT survey has shown that Amirudin Shari is the popular choice among the Malays in Selangor to helm the state should Pakatan Harapan (PH) win the polls, Astro Awani reported.
The “Selangor Malay-Only Public Opinion Survey” conducted by Endeavour-MGC 71 found 71% of 1,068 respondents approved of Amirudin’s performance as menteri besar, with 75% agreeing that PH should reappoint Amirudin as menteri besar if the coalition wins again.
When asked for individual choices, 46% of the respondents wanted Amirudin to hold the top job.
Former health minister and axed Umno member Khairy Jamaluddin, who is not attached to any political party now, was the second choice to become menteri besar with 24% preferring him to lead the state.
Umno’s Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz was the third choice at 10%.
Only 6% of those surveyed wanted former Selangor menteri besar Mohamed Azmin Ali to be at the helm.
Azmin, who won the Bukit Antarabangsa state legislative seat under PKR banner in 2018, is now with Bersatu, a party in the opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional.
The survey was conducted from June 12 to 18. There are 1,910,841 Malay voters in Selangor.
Meanwhile, the same report showed 63% of people surveyed saying they felt their rights were being threatened, while 87% said they did not know of the government’s measures to bring down the cost of living.
The survey reported 63% of respondents agreed to the statement without saying “who” or “what” threatened their rights, while 35 percent said “no”, and 2% said they do not know or have no opinion.
The report also included charts from the survey’s findings showing 49% were “extremely concerned” and 40% were “concerned” about the impact of inflation on their personal finances.
A total of 11% claimed they were “slightly concerned”.
Another chart from that survey showed 87% saying they were not aware of any government policies or initiatives aimed at curbing inflation or reducing the cost of living, while the remaining 13% said they were aware.
The survey was said to have been conducted in all 56 constituencies in Selangor with half of the respondents being male. Margin of error was 3% with 95% confidence for each respondent. – July 14, 2023.
