A GREEK court yesterday sentenced seven people to life imprisonment over the fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old football supporter, the ANA news agency reported.

Seven of the 12 accused – none of them older than 26 – were found guilty of murder and jailed for life. The five others received sentences of more than 19 years for complicity.

Alkis Kampanos was killed in February last year in the northern city of Thessaloniki during clashes between supporters of the city’s rival clubs Aris Thessaloniki and PAOK.

It was the third death as a result of fan violence in a three-year period in Thessaloniki alone.

The attack also left two of the victim’s friends injured.

The trial began in January. It included 47 hearings and more than 75 witnesses, after which the prosecutor spoke of “an attack organised and planned to the last second with the intention of homicide against all the victims”, according to ANA. – AFP, July 13, 2023.
