BUKIT Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said 7,548 love scam cases were recorded from 2018 to June this year, with losses of over RM382 million and approximately 7,200 victims.
Ramli said 82% of the victims were women.
“The remaining 1,297 cases involved male victims. There may be more but they were not reported. The female love scam victims were single mothers and single women,” he said.
He told reporters this at the launch of the anti-scam film trailer Oppa, produced by the Royal Malaysian Police with Dream Film Sdn Bhd, at KL Wellness City today.
The film, which is expected to hit the screens at the end of this year, aims to spread knowledge about the modus operandi of online scams and to raise awareness among the public to avoid becoming victims of fraud.
Ramli said his department has received only 16 reports on eBeliaRahmah fraud.
“Ever since such cases were reported (previously 14 cases), only two new case reports have been received. This is the result of the effectiveness of news reports.
“The community (especially students) is aware of this. They are careful now,” he said.
He said to ensure there is awareness in the community, his department has diversified prevention activities, including holding casual chats, talks and exhibitions at schools, houses of worship and universities. – Bernama, July 12, 2023.
