THE National Coalition of Patriotism and Unity (GPPK) has called on all parties, including politicians, to stop the politics of hate and instead embrace the spirit of love for the nation.
GPPK chairman Brig-Gen (R) Mohamed Arshad Mohamed Raji said it is sad as there are still quarters who politicise the differences among the people, especially on race and religion, even though the country has achieved independence for almost 66 years.
“We are seeing irresponsible parties hurling slander at their political opponents and creating incitement, which can spark unrest among the people,” he said.
“What is worst is that they poison and distort the minds of the people with propaganda of hate and slander. This is biggest hurdle to uniting the people. It will have a negative impact on the country’s social and economic development.”
Arshad was speaking at a press conference to announce the setting up of GPPK, which is a coalition of more than 60 civil society organisations, in Kuala Lumpur today.
He said GPPK members will collaborate to carry out programmes on education and promotion of solidarity and harmony in the country.
He said GPPK, with the slogan “Gelombang Perpaduan” (Unity Wave), will also conduct advocacy and rebuke those who are found to be issuing statements and taking actions that can threaten harmony among races.
“We want to state emphatically that GPPK is not on the side of any political party or to be used as a tool by a political party. We will not be silent on any political malpractice that may occur as a result of incitement by certain parties,” he said.
Arshad said Malaysia, as a multiracial country, should be a model of uniting its people under one identity.
He said the people need to return to the principles of Rukun Negara, which once succeeded in fostering the spirit of harmony and unity.
“The five principles of Rukun Negara are the key to racial harmony and unity. They can overcome all issues that cause anxiety among the people,” he said. – Bernama, July 11, 2023.
