Butterworth fire kills 2-year-old


A TWO-year-old boy, who was believed to be sleeping, died after the room in the flat he lived in with his family caught fire at Taman Pantai Bersih in Butterworth today. 

Butterworth Fire and Rescue Station operations officer Mohd Nasir Idris said his team received a distress call at 8.29am about a fire at a second-floor flat. 

“When the fire and rescue team arrived, they found a room on fire. The fire was successfully extinguished.

“About 20% of the room was destroyed and we were informed there was a two-year-old child in the room,” he said when contacted today.

He said firefighters found the boy’s body. 

Nasir said the victim’s body was sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for a post-mortem.

He said his department is investigating the cause of the fire.

North Seberang Perai acting police chief Siti Nor Salawati Saad when contacted confirmed the boy died in the fire.

“The victim was sleeping in the room when his mother left for work at 7.30am,” she said.

She said during the incident, his grandmother was showering while other family members slept. She said police are still investigating the incident. – Bernama, July 9, 2023.
