DEPUTY Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim has called on young people to avoid being influenced by discussions centred on sensitive issues, especially those involving religion, royalty and race, in the run-up to the six state elections next month.

He said they should instead use the opportunity to make a rational decision in choosing a party to helm their state government.

“I believe the youth are very critical and wise. They an informed group with information at their fingertips. This enables them to make comparisons and understand the current situation.

“So I hope the young will use this opportunity to vote carefully and celebrate the spirit of a healthy democracy,” he said.

Adam said while young people are free to express their views, argue and criticise, it should be done in a rational and reasonable manner.

“In the run-up to the state elections, debate on politics should touch on policies that benefit the community. It should not be an avenue to create false perceptions, make accusations, or slander others,” he said.

The Election Commission has set August 12 as polling day for all six states holding their elections. They are Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Penang, Selangor and Negri Sembilan.

Nomination is on July 29 and early voting is on August 8. – Bernama, July 7, 2023.
