State polls set for Aug 12

POLLING for six state elections has been set for August 12, the Election Commission (EC) announced today.

EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh said nomination day is July 29, while early voting is on August 8.

Ghani said the campaigning period has been set for 14 days from July 29, which is nomination day. 

He said 9,773,571 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots during the polls.

“Of them, 9,674,456 are ordinary registered voters, 49,660 are soldiers and their spouses, 47,728 are police and their spouses, and 1,727 are Malaysians registered as absent overseas voters,” he said.

Ghani said the deadline for early voting applications is July 8 for Malaysians residing overseas, July 11 for agencies or organisations, and July 26 for media, army, police and election officers.

The total cost for the six state polls is RM420 million, he said.

A total of 245 state seats will be contested – 32 in Terengganu, 36 each in Kedah and Negri Sembilan, 40 in Penang, 45 in Kelantan, and 56 in Selangor.

The EC chief said there will be 3,450 polling centres with 17,425 polling stations and channels, of which 260 will be early voting centres with 377 polling stations. – July 5, 2023.
