THE Communications and Digital Ministry is collaborating with Meta Platforms Inc (Meta), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as well as Bukit Aman to curb online crimes.

Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the move was made following a rise in online fraud and gambling cases as well as 3R issues relating to religion, royalty and race.

“Malaysians suffered losses almost exceeding RM330 million from January to May via Meta platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp).

“This is a 25% increase compared with 2022,” he said in a Facebook post today after chairing a meeting with Meta, MCMC and the police in Bukit Aman today.

Also present were deputy minister Teo Nie Ching, ministry deputy secretary-general Ma Sivanesan, MCMC chairman Salim Fateh Din, CyberSecurity Malaysia chief executive officer Dr Amiruddin Abdul Wahab, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain as well as the top police brass.

As a result of the meeting, he said Meta has expressed a commitment to closely cooperate with MCMC and the police to curb online crime.

“I believe the cooperation established will pave the way for scams, online gambling and 3R issues on the Meta platform to be reduced,” he said. – Bernama, July 4, 2023.
