DR Mahathir Mohamad and DAP will eventually fight each other even if they win 14th general election, a top MCA leader warned the Chinese.
MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun said her party remained the community’s best bet despite it losing more seats to DAP and its ally PKR, in the past two general elections.
The former senator and deputy women, family and community development minister said the four-party Pakatan Harapan coalition is ripe for future in-fighting.
PH comprises DAP, PKR, Amanah and Bersatu. Its prime minister designate is Dr Mahathir, a former Umno president who left the Malay party after falling out with current president and Prime Minister Najib Razak.
“The potential for a power struggle between Dr Mahathir and Anwar, and between Mahathir and Lim Kit Siang, I don’t think (PH) can just overlook it, if they ever win Putrajaya,” said the former Petaling Jaya Utara MP.
“This is why I say, when you vote for Pakatan Harapan, you are voting for an uncertain future,” she said.
PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has been named PH’s prime minister-in-waiting.
Dr Mahathir has said he would serve as interim prime minister and that PH would seek a royal pardon for Anwar so that he can be installed as prime minister.
Anwar is set to be released in June after serving two-thirds of his sentence for sodomy.
Chew said Dr Mahathir’s focus on Najib was telling and a signal that voters could not fully trust the former’s promises.
She said Dr Mahathir only has one aim in mind.
“It is a struggle by Dr Mahathir to fight for his son (Mukhriz) to become prime minister. It started within Umno and expanded from there.”
Flip-flopping DAP
Chew is a front-runner nominee to contest the parliamentary seat of Raub, Pahang, which MCA lost to DAP in the 13th general election.
This time, she is confident that Chinese voters would not be taken in by promises by PH leaders, particularly DAP.
From hudud (Islamic Penal Code) to Mahathirism, DAP has a track record of going against its stances, said Chew.
“The Chinese voters see very clearly what the DAP is doing is totally different what they’ve promised.
“Before 2013, they told everybody that they would not support race-based parties, saying they are going multiracial, but now they’re working with race-based party (Bersatu).
“They said ‘no’ to hudud, but they worked with PAS. They told you they wanted Dr Mahathir arrested, but now they’re working with him.
“This is why when you support DAP or Pakatan, you don’t know what the final outcome will be.” – March 26, 2018.
