IGP warns parties against playing up race, religion, royalty in polls

POLICE will take stern action against political parties playing up issues of race, religion and royalty in the state elections.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said politicians are reminded not to broach sensitive issues on the campaigns.

He said this was to avoid tension and fears.

“We have observed that each time the (three sensitive issues) are raised, there will be disunity and disharmony among the community,” he said in George Town last night.

“We want the state elections to run smoothly and peacefully so that voters can safely cast their votes.

Razarudin said political parties are reminded to comply with the law, especially the Election Offences Act 1954 and the Sedition Act.

“Officers will be monitoring the election campaigns and they will be at the talks.”

He said 40,000 police members will be on duty at the six state elections.

He said the Penang police contingent will be assisted by 663 force members from Bukit Aman and other states.

He said political parties are advised to apply for ceramah permits as early as possible.

“We do approve applications for permits made as late as 24 hours prior but we hope the applications can be made much earlier.”

Kedah, Penang, Selangor, Negei Sembilan, Kelantan and Terengganu are due to hold elections soon. – Bernama, July 4, 2023.
