THE Health Ministry has further eased Covid-19 restrictions with the wearing of masks no longer mandatory on public transport as well as in healthcare facilities.

Despite the relaxation, Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa encouraged the usage a face covering when taking public transport.

“Masks are highly encouraged for high-risk individuals such as senior citizens, those with low immunity and chronic diseases, and expectant mothers, in crowded areas,” she said in a statement today.

However, the donning masks is still mandatory for those who test positive for the coronavirus and for health workers who come in contact with patients.

Zaliha also said that the quarantine period for Covid-19 patients will be reduced from seven to five days, effective July 5.

She said the declaration of Malaysia as an infected area under the Prevention of Infectious Diseases Act has been extended another six months until to December 31, this despite the Covid-19 situation in the country no longer critical.

“With the risk of new variants and sub-variants of Covid-19 emerging in Malaysia, this extension is necessary.

“Also, the mass gatherings which are expected during the Aidiladha celebration and state elections mean there is a risk of a surge in cases, which would burden the public healthcare system if preventive measures are not taken.”

Zaliha said the ministry will continue to monitor the Covid-19 situation and variants reported from time-to-time, so that swift action can be taken when needed. – June 29, 2023.
