THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has started investigating the alleged involvement of politicians in protecting online gambling activities.

In a statement, the anti-graft body said the investigation is carried out based on information it has received and this was being shared with the police.

MACC will not compromise with any party involved in corrupt activities and the misuse of power,” it stated.

On Thursday, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail told the Dewan Rakyat that political patronage is the biggest constraint preventing law enforcers from taking action against online gambling syndicates.

He said these syndicates are protected by politicians who benefit from the illegal pacts.

“There is indeed an element of political patronage over these players.

“From this (political patronage) comes protection and influence, corruption and bribery.

Saifuddin said 2,119 illegal gambling websites were been blocked from 2021 to May 2023.

“When we block, they have mirror sites.

“We are also creating public awareness, asking them not to get involved, but now, on Telegram, they (syndicates) would invite us.

“If the government blocks Telegram, we are said to be not business friendly. This is a new threat,” he said.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said police were working with the MACC to address the matter and investigations are underway.

“PDRM reiterates its commitment not to allow activities that can cause harm to the community and the country and all measures taken are based on the law,” he said in a statement. – June 17, 2023.
