1.14 million foreign workers approved for employment so far this year

MALAYSIA has approved 1,136,022 foreign workers for employment this year as of March 18.

Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar said the bulk of the workers were for the manufacturing sector.

“Quota approvals for manufacturing sector are 469,106, construction (359,899), service (171,490), plantation (85,678), agriculture (49,473) and the mining and quarrying sector (376),” Sivakumar said in a written parliamentary reply. 

He was responding to a question from Kepong lawmaker Lim Lip Eng, who asked the minister to state how many foreign worker quotas have been approved this year. 

Sivakumar said 467,590 (41%) of the quota were approved for 10,093 employers.

The Batu Gajah MP said the Council of Ministers in a March 17 cabinet meeting agreed to postpone the approval of the employment quota of foreign workers.

He said enforcement is carried out to ensure compliance with the labour standards to preserve the interests and reputation of the country. – June 16, 2023.
